Hand Washing

The Importance of Handwashing... Stop Infectons!

Proper handwashing techniques can reduce the possibility of infection and cross contamination in the workplace. In fat the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that handwashing is the single most important factor in reducing the risk of infection.

You should wash your hands at the beginning of the workday... before and after each patient exposure. Before and after exposure to blood and/or potentially infectious materials... after touching contaminated surfaces... after handling contaminated instruments or other items which may be contaminated... Before eating... after using the restroom... before and after using gloves... and at the end of the workday.

Proper handwashing applies to all employees including office personnel. It should not be overlooked that if your job classification is in an office area, you may still frequently handle items that have been touched or handled by patients who may be infectious.

Do not let the use of disinfection and sterilization techniques give you a false sense of security. Do your part in preventing infections by following these important guidelines. It is important to remember that the use of gloves does not eliminate or reduce the need to wash your hands. Hands should be washed before donning gloves, as well as after use. Washing hands prior to using gloves removes organisms that thrive in warm, moist environments inside gloves.

The CDC recommends that use of antimicrobial or antibacterial soap in a liquid form. Bar soap is not recommended because it can transmit diseases. Antibacterial soaps are adequate for routine use but antimicrobial soaps are preferred.

When hands are soiled it is important to wash them right away. Washing your hands sounds simple but in order to be effective it must be done correctly. Follow these steps recommended by the CDC:

  1. Wet your hands with warm water

  2. Add liquid soap and rub vigorously. Rub the lather thoroughly on hands for 20 seconds. Do not

ignore thumbs, back of fingers and hands and under nails.

  3. Rinse hands well under warm running water

  4. Dry hands with paper towels

  5. Use the paper towel to shut off the water prior to discarding it

All this handwashing takes a toll on your skin! Chapped skin provides an entry route for bacteria and viruses. Use hand care products to prevent chapped skin.

MAKE HANDWASHING AN IMPORTANT WORK HABIT: Hand washing is a very important work practice control. Remember... many diseases and infections are spread by not washing your hands properly. Do your part in reducing infections.

I have read and understand the above.
